Me and my mom went to Honduras for her 48th birthday, and it was such a vibe. She’s a flight attendant which comes with perks , so we flew standby with Spirit from FLL to IAH, then grabbed economy tickets from Houston to Roatán. The trip was quick, but packed with memories, laughs, good food, and so much beach time.
When we landed, our driver David picked us up. He helped with our bags and took us (and another sweet older couple) to our hotel. On the way, we stopped at the grocery store — stocked up on water, tequila, and snacks. The store was so clean, had everything we needed, and even had the cutest stray dogs napping outside like they owned the place. I wanted to take one home!
We stayed at the Kimpton Hotel and let me tell you… 10/10 recommend. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with welcome drinks (with or without alcohol — considerate for non-drinkers) and smiles from literally the friendliest and most good looking staff I’ve ever seen. I’m not exaggerating.
The lobby? Straight out of Pinterest. A tropical oasis mixed with modern boho chic. I was taking mental notes for my future home because I’m an island gyal through and through, even in the city.
The hotel had:
- Great views
- Delicious restaurants on site
- West Bay Beach literally attached
- Happy hour with free cocktails, wine, and little bites every day
It was quiet but lively, the perfect balance for a family trip.
Day 1: Beach + Hotel Vibes
- Checked in, got food, hit happy hour
- Took photos on West Bay Beach
- Called it an early night to rest up
Day 2: Excursions + Rum Cake
- Morning pictures (because content ✨)
- Visited Daniel Johnson Monkey & Sloth Hangout → a guided 1-hour tour where we got to feed monkeys, hold sloths, see tropical birds, and learn about them. Only $30 per person!
- Stopped at the Roatán Rum Company → free rum + rum cake samples. I’m usually not a rum cake girl (I’m Haitian, I’ve tried a lot), but Honduras changed my mind. Moist, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, still with that rum kick. Bought some to bring home for my boyfriend.
- Back at the hotel → pool time, pineapple drinks by the beach, sample massage (locals hustle hard, respect to them).
- Dinner at Loretta’s Island Cooking → magical boat ride to get there, sunset views, authentic food.
Day 3: Mom’s Birthday 🎉
- Morning stop at the colorful Roatán sign for photos.
- Ferry to Little French Key Beach → private island, crystal clear water, animals (monkeys, pigs, peacocks). Spent the day swimming + tanning.
- Birthday dinner at Luna Muna → cocktails were great (fruity, strong, gorgeous presentation), but food was kind of underwhelming. Small portions, a little bland. Ambiance though? Perfect for a celebration.
Day 4: Last Day
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Took as many pictures as possible around the hotel because the backgrounds were insta-worthy everywhere
- Packed up and headed to the airport
Let’s Talk About the Food 😋
This deserves its own section because… yeah.
- Sea Cat (at the hotel): Best meal of the trip. Fried fish, tostones, rice & beans, pickled onion — so fresh, seasoned perfectly. We went back three times!
- Loretta’s Island Cooking: Took a boat there, watched the sunset on the way. Fried chicken + lobster with rice, beans, and plantains. It felt less like a restaurant and more like eating at a family cookout — cozy, authentic, and unforgettable.
- Luna Muna: Gorgeous setting and cocktails, but food was just “ok.” Still worth visiting for the ambiance and views.
Tips Before You Go ✈️
- Transportation: Taxis add up fast. Don’t rent a car if you’ll be drinking. Find one driver and stick with them — they’ll usually give you discounts or a set rate.
- Hotel: Kimpton works for all vibes — family trips, baecations, or girls’ trips.
- Hair: Leave the wigs at home. Between the heat and the water, it’s not worth the hassle. I wore Amazon clip-ins, swam every day, got tons of compliments, and had no problems. Low maintenance = vacation baddie.
- Locals: Talk to them! Everyone was kind, welcoming, and helpful. Closed mouths don’t get fed.
- Be present: You don’t have to photograph every single thing. Live in the moment, enjoy it, and thank God for the experience.
Would I Go Back?
Absolutely. One of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever visited — amazing people, delicious food, and plenty of excursions. Next time, I’d love to come back with my boyfriend to experience more nightlife (my mom isn’t into that scene). And honestly? I’d return just for the fried fish at Sea Cat.
